Walled Garden

At the heart of Kailzie Estate lies the celebrated walled garden. Enclosed by original early nineteenth century walls, it feels like a world of its own, rich in colour, structure and quiet detail.

Step inside and you find paths that weave through herbaceous borders, copper beech hedges and areas of productive planting. A historic sundial anchors the space while elegant Mackenzie and Moncur glasshouses shelter exotic and tender plants. In late spring the famous Laburnum Walk glows with golden blossom, creating one of the best loved views on the estate.

Originally brought back to life in the mid twentieth century and continually nurtured since, the walled garden offers regular visitors and first time guests alike a place to stroll, notice and enjoy the changing seasons.

Woodlands and Wild Gardens

Beyond the formal beds, Kailzie’s woodlands and wild gardens offer a more natural experience. Champion and rare trees rise above carpets of wildflowers, while red squirrels, otters and woodland birds make their homes among branches and banks.

Paths follow the course of the Kailzie Burn, giving peaceful walks under the canopy where light filters through leaves and the sound of water accompanies each step. At different times of year you might notice snowdrops, bluebells or autumn leaves adding their own colour.

Close by, the slip garden is an intimate space filled with herbaceous planting, older fruit trees and seasonal interest. Together these areas encourage thoughtful wandering and reward those who like to look a little closer at texture, light and pattern.

The Greenhouse

One of the earliest Mackenzie and Moncur glasshouses, now carefully restored and filled with fuchsias, pelargoniums, and exotics through the summer. The walled garden’s south-east orientation maximises sunlight for growing.

The Arboretum

One of Scotland’s most remarkable arboretums, home to champion and rare trees grown over generations. Seasonal displays unfold from carpets of snowdrops and spring bulbs to rich layers of rhododendrons, primulas, and striking specimen plants.

Laburnum Arch

When in full bloom, the Kailzie laburnum arch is a quietly breathtaking sight – soft cascades of yellow flowers forming a gentle tunnel that invites visitors to wander through and pause for a moment.
